The California Wildfires and it's Effects

The California Wildfires and it's Effects

in life •  4 hours ago
Since living in California for over 10 years - I have had the good fortune of beautiful weather, outstanding scenery and a creative culture that almost goes unmatched in the World.
That being said, we have plenty of downsides of living here as well: earthquakes, mudslides, pretentious people (LA for the superficiality, SF for the ego induced tech crowd, and SD for the laissez-faire lifestyle) and of course, the topic of today, the California wildfires.

The Thomas fire, the behemoth of the current fire apocalypse, began in Ventura County, north of Los Angeles and has infiltrated Santa Barbara County, made more powerful by the stronger winds and consumption of century-old unburnt coastal sage and chaparral. One part of the blaze is pushing through the mountains while another is descending on Highway 101 and the Pacific Ocean. Hundreds of firefighters are doing all that they can to save the picturesque beach community of Carpinteria. Meanwhile, 8 miles to the north, evacuations have begun in Montecito, an enclave of old money and the location of the homes of celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres. We are witnessing destruction on a scale that hasn't been seen with wildfires.
The latest round of California fires now ranks as one of the worst in state history and as it enters day seven there is still no end in sight. More evacuations have been ordered as the fire enters and threatens even more communities.
The Los Angeles Times reports:
Since it erupted near Thomas Aquinas College on Dec. 4, the Thomas fire has forced 88,000 people to flee their homes. Official estimates have put the cost of combating the blaze at $25 million.
By Sunday evening, the fire was 10% contained.

So what does this all mean. Why is this happening and can we prevent it from happening again in the future? First, it is important to understand that there are many reasons that fires can start, but we live in a place that has bouts of heat, coupled with drought. Our vegetation quite often turns into tinder and fuels this phenomena. Second, we are really living in times that climate change is accelerating this situation. Whether we like it or not, the extreme heat of the summer carried over into the winter and threatening to do so into our "winter." Currently, it is 85 degrees F or 30 degrees C and it is December. The fundamental fire equation in California has three variables: the fuel mass, including the age and dryness of brush; the extent of residential and other development into chaparral and forest ecologies; and the intensity of the wind.
Wildfires happen. This much we know. And the images that have been coming out have been nothing short of amazing. My good friend @schulbzposted ones on the 405 which is 10 minutes from where I used to live (I am more downtown now, but the sky has been nothing short of crazy).
We have all seen these videos and series of shots (I drive here ALL THE TIME!!!)

The members of the animal kingdom have been also profoundly affected by the wildfires. There habitats literally going up in smoke driving many of them to seek sanctuary wherever they can.

Just pure craziness! I would like to turn our attentions towards the animals a bit. I have had friends and others that have scrambled to get their horses out of the stables in time. Every type of animal from cougars to goats to exotic zoo animals have had to scramble for safety.

This is SO sad and could have been prevented. Most ranchers have a contingency plan and know how to get their animals out when needed.

To all the non-horse people confused by the videos and images that they have seen: The fire spreads SO fast.
In San Diego it spread from 175 - 1000 acres in under an hour. A lot of the time at a barn, phone service is terrible. So it’s hard to know where it is, where it started or that one even started unless you see it coming towards you (The case of San Luis Rey training center).
Most of the news we relay from social media and peoples live feeds. Best case you load and evacuate horses...
In cases of fire these roads can be shut off for access VERY fast. When people hear about the fires in horse communities there are so many volunteers who go to the mandatory evacuation spots. You can’t just call and book a hauler when your horses are 5 or 6 miles from the fire because everyone is helping at the most needed spot.
The next thing is to get horses out of stalls. You may have seen horses tied up in open arenas. Like at the Gibson Ranch. This was because there were still people able to load horses and hand walk them out. The safest thing for humans and horses when it’s possible. They were tied up so they didn’t escape, but were out of barns and stalls that could burn down and so they could be grabbed and taken away. Gibson Ranch burned down but all the animals were evacuated!
Then worst case you set them free and hope that they get away from the fire and burning structures. This is what saved many of the horses down at the Del Mar race track when there is no time. You would just run and open each door and hope the horse runs. There may not be time to pull each horse out when you want to undo as many doors as you can. And some horses sadly might not leave as the feel it is their safe place. I heard a story of one owner almost beating his horse to get him to leave his stall and he wouldn’t!!!
Then there are the images of the padlocks and the statement from animal control about padlocking.

(Via Daily Mail)

This made me sick. There is no excuse EVER for padlocking a horse in. I just have no words to express how irresponsible and neglectful that was and it is quite horrifying. From free rescue horses to million dollars + show horses. This absolutely is NOT standard practice.
But that was just one ranch and many horses died and many people are injured from doing the right thing...

Jam Sesh!

Jam Sesh!

One of my all time favorite foods is home made strawberry jam. My mom has been making it for me for as long as I can recall. I remember being as little as 5 or 6 years old, standing on a chair helping her to stir the jam and pour it in the jars. The memories come back everytime I pop a new jar open.
I used to loved this jam so much as a kid that I would just eat it straight out of the jar with a spoon (ok, I still do it sometimes lol). It is truly that delicious though, trust me you would do it too.
We dragged organic strawberries with us (that we picked) all the way from Wisconsin to Arizona just so we could make our favorite jam! I know it sounds like a lot of work but if you ever had this jam then you would know it is well worth all the troubles we went through.
Now that we have finally settled in a bit here in Arizona we figured this was a good day to make the jam we have been waiting months for. So this morning my mother, my fiance and I got to work and made us a few jars of mom's famous jam.
Now comes the worst part, waiting the 24 hours to set before we can eat it :/ this part is almost painful! lol. But I guess it's like the old saying goes
good things come to those who wait.
So I will be patient and wait for tomorrow to pop that jar of jam open, but when I do you better believe I am going to eat about half of a jar right with a spoon right away! lol. Gimme a break, it's been nearly two months since i had my last jar... I'm basically with-drawling at this point! haha.
Anyhow, if you have never had home made jam then I highly suggest you do yourself a favor and do it! You won't be disappointed.
Peace, love and all that hippie shit

7 Tips that Make You Directly Charismatic (English/German)

7 Tips that Make You Directly Charismatic (English/German)

in deutsch •  8 hours ago
George_Clooney-4_The_Men_Who_Stare_at_Goats_TIFF09_(cropped).jpg
Often we see famous people who, with their self-confident demeanor, let us believe almost everything they say.
How do these people effect this in us?
It is CHARISMA.
What makes charisma, and how do we let other people have a positive impression of us?

I tried to analyze these questions and put together a list of 7 points, which bring a lot of personal insight in me.
I'm sure there will be one or the other point for you.

1. Be yourself

The first point has certainly been heard many times, but it is even more important.
Be authentic and do not pretend to be someone other.
Your dialogue partner will recognize this very quickly and ask himself why you are just pretending.
Maybe you have something to hide? (Doesn't have to be corpse in your basement)

Be yourself. All others are already taken - Oscar Wilde

Of course, you can have examples, people you admire and from whom you can learn some good qualities.
But what makes the difference in the end is your personal uniqueness.
Only if you are authentic, you will be happy.

You have to get to know yourself.
  • Get to know your strengths and weaknesses
  • be honest with yourself - even with things that do not go so well.
  • Live according to your ideas and values and not to those expected of society
  • Orient yourself in your decisions not outward - The desire to please others and get their recognition, is probably in the nature of human.
However, you should not go so far as to make decisions according of others that are important to you.
Suppose your father is a doctor, his father was already a doctor and now you are expected to take the same step.
But you have always been technically adept and would much rather be a programmer.
Decide on YOUR WELL, because it is alone YOUR FUTURE, that YOU have to live.

Unless you are a Nazi, then rather be someone else ;)

2. Be self-confident

IMG_9484.PNG
Self-esteem makes you extremely attractive to the opposite sex.
For example, even if you're not the best-looking one, you can easily make up for it with a healthy sense of self-esteem.

Self-confidence can be practiced.
The more often you do one thing, the safer you become in this and the more self-confident you become.

Example:
If you get the push by a woman 3 to 4 times, many people will not try it anymore because they are intimidated.
The key is to do it again and again. You learn how women react in certain situations usually, so you can consider it the next time.
The same with your first performance on stage or during a lecture:
You are terribly excited and afraid to fail.
With your 10.11.100. performance you slowly get routine and you will find it a little easier each time.
The more often you do something, the safer you become in it.

Do not rely on the help of others, but make your own decisions with confidence and pursue your goals.
  • At this point, be aware of what your strengths are and use them purposefully.
  • Talk about topics in which you know about yourself - when you are informed, you are much more confident and that also notices your counterpart.
  • Do things that you are good at - this will help you and the society.
  • However, you also should dare to approach things that you are afraid of doing - doing things that you are afraid of is courage, and courage leads to self-confidence.

Self-esteem is when you come home drunk at 3am, your wife is expecting you with the broom and you ask:
Are you cleaning here or are you flying away today?

3. Do not complain

Do you admire people who complain about everything and everyone? So not me.
At my old workplace there was a person who spoke only bad about situations and people.
For me, that always meant to take a distance.
It seemed to me that this person was complaining of sheer boredom.
When you talk badly about things your brain will save this and you will unconsciously come into a negative spiral that will make it hard to get out again.

It works much better, if you always have a positive attitude to things and see the good in everything.
This has a direct effect on your charisma and makes you more sympathetic to your counterpart.
Do something good for yourself and your environment by being positive.

Remember: if you talk bad in the absence of a person, it's very likely that you're also being talked about badly.
If your boss's new hairstyle is so ugly, I'd rather should my mouth and smile friendly. :)
vulture-613074_960_720.jpg

4. Pay attention to your body language

Body language makes a huge difference in how you are viewed.
Always pay attention to a correct posture.
An upright posture seems, unsurprisingly, much more self-conscious than a bent, downward facing posture.

Quasimodo.png
At least he laughs

That means back straight, shoulders to the back, chest out.
But do not exaggerate it, or you'll look like him

känguruh.jpg
Don't fidget much, even the spinner is so famous at the moment. Face your counterpart directly.
That symbolizes your interest.
He will not feel that you would like to run away now.

5. Keep eye contact

When you talk, don't avoid eyes and don't roll your eyes.
If you constantly look around in the area, this symbolizes the uncertainty.
Practice looking your opponent in the eyes, without looking endlessly staring.
(He should not think you a psychopath)

MyCard_The_Joker.jpg
Avoid being distracted during a conversation.
Constantly looking at the phone, braiding your hair or starting to laugh loudly during the conversation, because you remember the fall of your friend at the last ice,
looks extremely bored and is also very disrespecful.
(even if the reminder is extremely funny)

eis ausgerutscht.jpg

6. Listen to others

Don't try to be the center of the earth by keeping the word and not letting your counter part speak.
I have a friend who talks about herself all the time.
What happened to her recently, her latest achievements, her breakfast today, and the latest book on the market. (It was her own)
The talking ratio here is easily 90% to 10%, although the ratio in my conversations is usually very balanced.

So don't do it like her and let others have their say.
Show interest in people and their lifes.
If they feel liked and valued, it will be much easier for them to give it back.

Your patience with some people will pay off again at least.

7. Give people a positive feeling

I attach special importance to the 7. and final point.
There are some values that make me feel that they have been lost over time.
When people feel comfortable in your presence, they also show it to you and they are more open towards you.

Compliment your fellow beings:
Every person likes compliments, even if he does not admit it.
Compliments strengthen the self-confidence and are also a great start for an open conversation.
Do not overdo it with compliments and do not say standard terms.
Say for example:
'Hey, you have a really nice eye color that matches my underwear.'
( Of course not)

Give, without expecting return:
Which kind of people would you rather like and would be willing to make a pleasure for him:
  1. The one who lends you $ 3 today for lunch, but which you absolutely have to repay tomorrow at 1:00 pm with 10% interest.
  2. Or the one who pays you the entrance for a concert, because you are currently short of cash, without even mentioning a word of repayment?
Trust is based on confidence.
So if you meet a good-natured person, I would not recommend you to take advantage of his trust or good nature, but instead be grateful and, on occasion, return the favor.

schenken.jpg
Have humor:
Do not take life too seriously. Humor can always be a key and is welcomed by the vast majority of people.
You should also be able to laugh about yourself. Self-irony is sympathetic and is a sign of personal strength.
Of course, the situation should fit into jokes.

What does a dog without legs do?
Walk around the block (in Germany you say: to DRAG around the block.

If possible, you should not do this joke if your dialogue partner's dog recently had to have his legs amputated.

Conclusion

If you want to make a good impression on your fellow humans, pay attention to the following points:
- do not pretend to be someone other
- work on your self-confidence
- have a positive attitude and carry them outward
- Pay attention to facial expressions and gestures
- Be a good listener and take time for people
- Make people compliments and give without expecting something in return.

If all these points do not work, then get rich, president or move to a lonely island ;)
Always be yourself and try not to impress people at any cost.
After all, the point is that you are happy and feel well in your skin

Can you agree to my selected points or is it complete nonsense?
What makes people sympathetic in your opinion?
Good looks, humor, charisma, or rather a fat bank account?
Tell me in a comment.

7 Tipps, die Dich Direkt Charismatischer machen

George_Clooney-4_The_Men_Who_Stare_at_Goats_TIFF09_(cropped).jpg

Tue dir und deiner Umwelt also was Gutes, indem du positiv bist.

Was macht ein Hund ohne Beine?

  • arbeite an deinem Selbstbewusstsein

Was macht Menschen deiner Meinung nach sympatisch?
